Coppervane Privacy Policy

The short version

Coppervane collects nothing about you. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind. Nothing you enter or view is sent to Squared Studio LLC, and we have no servers that could receive it.

Everything below is detail about where your data sits and which services the app talks to on your behalf. None of it changes that summary.

What Coppervane stores, and where

All of it stays on your own devices, in the app's own storage or in the system Keychain. None of it is backed up to us or synced by us, and your keys are never synced to iCloud.

On the Mac

Your Ambient Weather API key and Application key
The macOS Keychain
Your unit preference and menu bar display options
The app's preferences
Your ZIP code, if you enter one, and the coordinates it resolves to
The app's preferences
The most recent reading and seven days of daily highs, lows, rainfall and pressure
The app's preferences, and a file in the app's App Group container so the widgets can read it

On iPhone and Apple Watch

Your Ambient Weather API key and Application key
The iPhone's Keychain, and the Apple Watch's Keychain once you send them across
The stations on your account, the one you chose, and your unit preference
The app's shared preferences on each device
The most recent reading and seven days of daily highs, lows, rainfall and pressure
The app's shared container on the watch, where the complication reads it

Deleting Coppervane from a device removes everything it stored there. Nothing survives the app.

A note on the keys. They are held in the Keychain, encrypted at rest and readable only by Coppervane itself. They are also read-only keys: they grant access to your station's readings and nothing else, no account changes and no billing, and you can revoke them at any time from your ambientweather.net account page.

What leaves your devices

Coppervane makes three kinds of network request. All are made directly from your device to the service named, over HTTPS. None pass through us.

1. Ambient Weather (api.ambientweather.net), on every device. Your API key and Application key are sent to Ambient Weather to retrieve your own station's readings. This is the service that issued those keys. On the Mac, Coppervane polls roughly once every five minutes while it is running. On Apple Watch it fetches when you open the app and, when watchOS allows, about every 25 minutes in the background. On iPhone it contacts Ambient Weather only when you validate your keys and load your stations. Ambient Weather's handling of your data is governed by their own privacy policy.

2. Apple geocoding, on the Mac only. If you enter a ZIP code for sky conditions, Coppervane asks macOS to convert it to coordinates using Apple's geocoding service. Your ZIP code is sent to Apple as part of that lookup, and Apple's privacy policy governs it. This happens once per ZIP code; the result is cached on your Mac and not looked up again. Enter no ZIP code and this never happens.

Coppervane does not request or use your device's location on any platform. Your Mac, iPhone and Apple Watch never ask you for location permission, because the app never needs it.

3. Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com), on the Mac only. The coordinates from step 2 are sent to Open-Meteo to retrieve current sky conditions, which is what draws the little sun or cloud in the widget. No key, no account, and no identifier is attached, just a latitude and longitude. Open-Meteo's privacy policy governs their handling of it. Leave the ZIP code blank and this never happens either.

Between your iPhone and your Apple Watch. When you tap Send to Apple Watch, your keys, your station choice, your unit preference and the list of stations on your account travel to the watch over Apple's Watch Connectivity link between the two paired devices. That transfer is between your own devices. It does not pass through us, and it is not iCloud.

Nothing else is transmitted. There is no fourth request.

What Coppervane does not do

  • No advertising, and no advertising identifiers
  • No tracking across apps or websites, and no data shared with data brokers

Coppervane is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, children included.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top. Coppervane's behaviour is described above as it is today; should a future version ever collect anything, that will be stated here and in the App Store privacy label before the version ships.
